Assistant Professor of Economics

Pitt State Faculty_Gately

“I started teaching because I had professors who took care of me, voiced confidence in me, and drove me to be better, and I wanted to do that for other people.”

Degrees Held:

  • Ph.D., University of Arkansas, 2021
  • M.A., University of Arkansas, 2018
  • BBA, Hardin-Simmons University, 2016

Career Highlights:

  • Received a grant from the National Science Foundation (joint with Jason Aimone) for a conference on interdisciplinary ethics and norms
  • Have been teaching for over 6 years
  • Voted "Most Likely to Become a Professor" by my undergraduate honors peers
  • In which online Pittsburg State program(s) do you teach?

    MBA in General Administration

  • What do you want students to take away from your classes? What do they learn?

I want students to learn how to apply psychological concepts to economics, how to use nudges, and to think more thoroughly about the "Homo Economicus" model of decision-making.

  • What types of projects do your students do in the online courses?

Students complete two mini-papers (2-3 pages) about decision-making environments. For their second paper, students design a nudge and have a decision-maker (broadly defined) review it.

  • What advice would you give to those considering your online program?

Spend time observing your workplace and the everyday decisions that occur there. You'll learn far more than you think!

  • What is the value of a higher degree in the field in which you teach? What are some of the skills students gain in this program?

In my courses, students will gain the skills to better craft decision-making environments and become "choice architects." Whether we like it or not, we will all become a choice architect at some point – even if the person we are designing decision-making environments for is ourselves!

  • Why did you start teaching?

I started teaching because I had professors who took care of me, voiced confidence in me and drove me to be better, and I wanted to do that for other people.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

"Nudge" by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.

I enjoy building guitars and operating model trains in my spare time. I also completed the last 200 miles of the Camino de Santiago during my undergrad.
