Receiving this comment from a student: “The best part about this course was all of the encouragement you provided as our professor. Of all the times that I needed someone to encourage us to keep going, cheer us on, and be completely understanding of the challenge in seeing this degree through to the end, you came through at the most critical time. Words cannot thank you enough for that.”

  • In which online Pittsburg State program(s) do you teach?

    MBA in General Administration

  • What do you want students to take away from your classes? What do they learn?

My goal for students when they complete my class is to have the knowledge and skills to analyze the internal and external environment (by applying the frameworks and tools we've learned) for an organization and industry to develop strategic plans that create a sustainable competitive advantage.

Students learn how to evaluate organizations and their core competencies to determine what factors organizations need to consider when making strategic decisions.

  • What types of projects do your students do in the online courses?

We perform case analysis (applying the frameworks and tools we've learned), complete application-based activities, post and respond to discussions, and give oral presentations.

  • What advice would you give to those considering your online program?

The 7-week sessions are intense and require significant time and focus.

  • What is the value of a higher degree in the field in which you teach? What are some of the skills students gain in this program?

The value of a higher degree is that it opens more doors for you because prospective employers see that you have chosen to continue to learn and develop your knowledge and skills. They also recognize that the students' depth and breadth of expertise surpass that of other potential employees because the students have earned advanced degrees.

Students apply the frameworks and tools required for business strategy (SWOT Analysis, Porter's 5 Forces, Strategic Group Maps, Value Chain Analysis, etc.) in multiple industries to gain the skills of creating strategic plans, identifying core competencies, and developing sustainable competitive advantages.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I was working for an education company and felt that having classroom experience would give me insight into what educators experience in the classroom. When I decided it was time to make a career change, teaching full-time was the perfect next step for me.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

“Speed of Trust” by Stephen M.R. Covey

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.

I call this the Forbes (my maiden name) effect. My dad has a sister who is 14 years younger than him. I have a sister 14 years younger than me. My daughters are 14 years apart.

  • What are your preferred pronouns?

    She/her/hers
